The reform and opening-up policies are exactly the kin

ds of market-driven reforms needed to make this happen. The Chinese government is investing heavily in research

and development, but it should be noted that the R&D spending as a percentage of GDP is still lower than that of the US.

Nobody likes competition against themselves. So, it must be admitted that China’s transiti

on to a high-tech, high-value-added economy will come as a shock to many companies around the world.

The US economy, which has about 7 percent of GDP in high-tech manufacturing, will be lightly affected by this change.

On the other hand, advanced manufacturing contributes around 20 percent of GDP in South Korea, Japan, Ge

rmany and a few smaller European countries. They will be much more directly affected.

China’s transition over the next 10 years will not be painless for its compa

nies or for foreign competitors. But, reform and opening-up policies that create more com

petitive companies and markets are the only way to achieve a richer and more productive world economy in the long term.

In a bid to protect its IPR, Entertainment One has also e

entered an anti-counterfeiting alliance initiated by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba that sees more than 130 brands from hom

e and abroad share information and technical support as well as pool their resources to combat piracy.

According to Matthew Bassiur, vice-president and head of globa

l IP enforcement at Alibaba Group, the company uses algorithms to identify and r

emove infringing items before they can even get on the e-commerce platform. Alibaba also issues alerts for products wi

th a significant number of customer complaints and investigates its manufacturing, distribution and supply chain.

Pfeiffer noted that tackling piracy can be time intensive and costly but the company s

tands to “reap longer-term benefits in both stopping current infringement and deterring future ones”.

“What is clear is that the Chinese authorities appreciate the challenges we face as a brand, and that they are incre

asingly willing to assist where possible to support the protection of our IP,” he said.

There are more than 40 commercial fishermen dedi

cated to catching Asian carp in western Kentucky. The long-term prospects offered by ex

cessive numbers of the species are what Berry and Irwin are relying on to ensure work until they retire.

Berry said: “We want a bigger boat. From what we see out there, we confidently think we can catch

anywhere from 13,000 to 23,000 kg a day with a purse seine type of net. The schools of fish are massive.”

Once a school is located, a skiff encircles it with a purse seine

net. The lead line is then pulled in to close the net, preventing fish from escaping.

“The way we are fishing now, we start the net off at the bow of the boa

t,” Berry said. “But we are missing fish because we are not going fast enough.”

He said he and Irwin are saving and plan to reinvest all their money o

n equipment. A bigger boat would also help. They have to del

iver two to three times a day because the one they use can only hold up to 1,360 kg of fish.

Yancheng, which is further north of the Yangtze, turned

d to the river for water in late June after experiencing at least four drinking water contamination incidents.

“As many areas abandon local sources and turn to the Yangtze, some sections of the river have become overcrowded” with diversion facilities, the report said.

Even the Yangtze is not a perfectly safe supply. In April 2014, for example, drinking wa

ter in Taizhou was interrupted because of pollutants discharged from local chemical plants.

In 2016, inspectors from the central government visited 12 of the 30 sites for collecting drink

ing water along the Yangtze in Jiangsu province and found eight with environmental violations, includin

g the existence of ports for the transportation of chemicals and fish farms in protected areas.

In March 2018, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the Min

istry of Water Resources initiated a special campaign to root out environment

In 1908, the rail line from Shanghai reached Nanjing

The rail link between Tianjin and Nanjing’s Pukou district-the Tientsin-Pukow Railw

ay-was completed in 1912. But the two lines could not be connected because there was no bridge across the river.

According to the Academy of Sociology, which was founded by scholars from Nanjing Univers

ity, at least two structures-the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge and the Chongqing Baishatuo Yangtze

River Bridge-were built before the Nanjing structure. But neither was considered a landmark by the public.

In 1913, Zhan Tianyou, who was known as “the father of China’s railways”, traveled to Nan

jing to inspect the Yangtze riverbed to build a bridge. However, he dropped his plan because the river had an ave

rage width of 1,500 meters, was more than 70 meters at its deepest and the water flow was 3 meters per second.

Zhan reportedly stayed for a few days, left without saying a word, and then decided to inspe

ct the river in Wuhan, Hubei province, before completing the first design for the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge.

China is using high-tech measures, such as satell

ite remote sensing technologies, in protecting its cultural heritage

, according to an official with the National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA).

Chen Peijun, director of the NCHA’s supervision and inspection

department, said in an interview with Xinhua that the administration has been using remote sens

ing to monitor some of the country’s key cultural heritage sites and stretches of the Great Wall and their nearby areas.

Chen said the administration will also explore the use of other technological means such as the internet, cloud computi

ng, big data and drones in the administrative and law enforcement work for cultural heritage protection.

He said new technologies help improve the efficiency of supervision and

Holmwood adds that foreign literature is no longer “just

Scandinavian crime novels” for British readers. Among the different strands that have cont

ributed to such changes, one is that “fantasy, epic historical romances as well as science

fiction are easier genres” to introduce ideas from another culture.

“People are looking for something new, and Chinese sci-fi an

d wuxia (martial arts) fantasy are stepping into this void,” she says.

Gigi Chang, a freelance translator in Shanghai, released Condor Heroes’s second book, A Bond Un

done, in January. The Daily Mail in Britain calls it “a glorious, involving, kinetic epic”.

Chang says besides the changing market, where translated wor

ks are becoming more prominent, the quality of Jin Yong’s wr

ting, as well as the series’ experienced publisher, MacLehose Pres

s, are factors that have led to its popularity in Britain.

Taiwan separatists, US slammed for interaction

A spokesman for the Chinese mainland slammed the United States and Taiwan separatists on Wednesday for try

ing to undermine China’s territorial integrity with their recent military interactions and pro-secession rhetoric.

Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a news conference on Wednesday that China resol

utely opposes any official interaction or military dialogue between the US and Taiwan.

“The US should handle the Taiwan question carefully and prop

erly, so as not to damage Sino-US ties, or peace and security in the Taiwan Straits,” he said.

Experts said such actions are detrimental to peace and sec

urity across the Taiwan Straits, as separatists are desperate to win votes in the elec

tion next year by hyping security issues and attempting to draw international support for their goal.

Last week, the American Institute in Taiwan officially acknowle

dged that military personnel have been posted at its office since 2005, and US weapons man

ufacturer Raytheon was granted a $9 million contract to upgrade Taiwan’s Patriot missile defense system.

Illegal trade in wildlife, pesticides among key topics

The second inter-ministry joint conference convened on Friday to coordinate moves to crack down on the illegal trade of wild animals and plants.

The conference cited 24 key tasks for the 25 member departments, three m

ore than the number during the first such event. This year, the lists for key wild ani

mals and plants will be revised while a campaign will be conducted nationwide to crack down on illegal hunting and sale

s of wild animals and plants, and products made from them. In the meantime, the campaign entitled “Blue Sk

y 2019″ will be carried out to hit the smuggling of ivory and other wild animal products.

In November 2016, the inter-ministry joint conference on cracking

down on the illegal trade of wild animals and plants was approved by the State Council to stre

ngthen coordination between different departments and improve efficiency of such crackdowns.

In the past year, the Ministry of Public Security and several departm

ents made concerted efforts to crack down on the illegal manufacturing, transporting and smu

ggling of ivory products while extensively promoting public education on the matter.
